Long time rare book and Judaica specialists, Kestenbaum & Company conducted their inaugural auction devoted exclusively to Jewish art and delivered stellar results. The auction cover lot, Moritz Oppenheim’s iconic 1867 painting “Friday Evening Blessing”, delivered a tremendous result, indeed breaking a world record for this artist at auction, selling to a private buyer for $442,100 (prices include the buyer’s premium).
Another auction highlight yielding a satisfying result was a fine portrait by Isidor Kaufmann of a Hassidic Rabbi. The painting realized $251,700.
The complete suite of eight original gouache and ink illustrations for the Book of Job by Arthur Szyk, each signed by the artist, comfortably sold within its estimate at $135,300.
This new venture for Kestenbaum & Company, with its ensuing strong result, signals a future at the firm of increasingly diverse auctions.
The company’s next auction of Fine Judaica will be held in Spring, 2016. For further information and/or to request images, please contact Jackie Insel at 212-366-1197 or Jackie@Kestenbaum.net
