Description
On four ball feet and rim, rectangular box with fluted lower section, pinched beneath rim; gadrooned lip. Two ovoid handles with shell ornaments. Lid with fluted central section, oval fluted finial. Engraved at front with two ram’s horns flanking Hebrew word “Shofar.” Marked on base. H: 110mm.
summary
Another example of “religious conversion” - a sugar caddy transformed into an Etrog container. The Hebrew word “Shofar” (ram’s horn) may indicate the family name of the owner, or his august role as Shofar Blower in his synagogue.
